There are moments in life when everything feels upside down—when what you see and feel doesn’t align with what you believe. Maybe you’ve faced a loss, a sudden change, or a prayer that seems to go unanswered. In those seasons, doubt creeps in, fear takes root, and faith starts to feel like wishful thinking. But it’s in these very moments that God calls us to lean not on our feelings, but on Him.

Feelings Are Real, But Not Always Reliable

God created us with emotions. They are a gift, but they were never meant to lead us. Our feelings respond to circumstances, but our faith is rooted in truth. When life is hard, feelings often tell us that God has abandoned us, that we’re alone, or that our situation is hopeless.

But Scripture paints a different picture:

“The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick; who can understand it?”
Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV)

In other words, feelings can be misleading. That’s why we must learn to live by what we know—not just what we feel.

Faith Is Holding On When Everything Shakes

Faith isn’t about pretending you’re okay. It’s about choosing to trust God when you’re not. It’s clinging to His promises when your circumstances seem to contradict them. Hebrews 11 is full of men and women who trusted God in the face of uncertainty, discomfort, and delay. They didn’t have all the answers—but they had a deep trust in the One who did.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)

Even Jesus, in the garden of Gethsemane, wrestled with intense emotion—grief, distress, and agony. Yet He still said, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” That’s what faith over feelings looks like.

What Does Trusting God Really Mean?

Trusting God doesn’t mean ignoring your emotions. It means not letting them dictate your reality. Trust is:

  • Believing that God is good, even when life is not.

  • Surrendering control, even when you don’t understand the outcome.

  • Remembering God’s faithfulness, even when today feels uncertain.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

When you can’t trace God’s hand, you can still trust His heart.

Practical Ways to Lean on Faith in Difficult Seasons

1. Stay Grounded in the Word

Truth anchors your soul when feelings threaten to pull you under. Meditate on scriptures that remind you of God’s character and promises.

2. Be Honest in Prayer

God is not intimidated by your fear, doubt, or frustration. Pour out your heart to Him. Prayer doesn’t always change your situation—but it will change your posture.

3. Choose Worship Over Worry

Worship is an act of defiance against despair. It shifts your focus from your problem to the One who holds the solution.

4. Lean Into Community

Isolation breeds doubt. Surround yourself with people who will pray for you, speak truth to you, and walk alongside you.

5. Remember Past Faithfulness

Look back on times when God came through for you before. Let your memory fuel your hope.

When Nothing Makes Sense, He Still Does

Life will confuse you. Emotions will betray you. But God never will. He is constant in the chaos, faithful in the silence, and near in your brokenness.

Faith over feelings isn’t easy—but it is powerful. It’s the quiet decision to say, “God, I don’t get this, but I still trust You.”

And that kind of faith? It changes everything.
